A kaleidoscope of turquoise seas, delicious foods and the welcoming heat of the sun are just some of the reasons for Kefalonia’s popularity. Along with the rest of the Greek Islands, A holiday here will be spent beach side, topping up your tan and cooling off in the water. If you are only here for a short break though, it can be hard to know where to find the best swimming spots; usually you find your favourite beach the day before you are due to come home! To ensure you don’t waste any time, here’s my pick of the 5 top swimming spots in Kefalonia…
With burnt orange sand underfoot, Xi beach isn’t usually what you’d expect of a Greek Islands beach. It’s definitely one of top swimming spots in Kefalonia however; backed by white cliffs it provides easy access, beautiful surroundings and calm waters, with sand underfoot for a long way out. This makes it an ideal choice if you’ve got small family members in tow! The facilities are great too so if you tire of the water, the spattering of sun beds and colourfully patterned parasols offer welcome respite from the heat of the sun. As there is no resort here, you are best to reach this beach with car hire in Kefalonia Airport. Be sure to indulge in a spot of spa therapy while you are here too; the locals insist that clay from the cliffs mixed with a bit of sea water and rubbed on to your body makes for a wonderful skin treatment!
A crescent shaped moon of sand, Spathi Beach is backed by trees offering a wonderfully peaceful and shady area to relax, whilst at the water’s edge, the gentle turquoise tide awaits you. The best part about it however, is that this spot remains relatively uncrowded throughout the year, allowing you to enjoy this little slice of heaven without being bothered by others! On windier days, there can be a bit more surf to contend with but not to the point where less confident swimmers will be put off. The small café on the sand serves up snacks and drinks whilst the seafood restaurant will provide the perfect fuel at the end of a sleepy day in the sun. This is a gorgeous example of Kefalonia’s unspoilt beaches.
One of the best known and easily one of the most beautiful beaches on the shores of the island, Lourdas(or Lourdata as it is sometimes known) makes for a popular swimming spot. Clear, calm and the oh-so-inviting shade of blue sea will meet you here. The Blue Flag sands stretch for 1.2 miles, with a dramatic backdrop of Mount Ainos, it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular option. Be sure to secure a parasol and apply your sunscreen as there’s no natural shade here but the waters are calm and provide the perfect respite from the heat of the day!
The village of Pessada isn’t often high up on visitors’ lists when visiting Kefalonia, despite its proximity to Lourdas. Traditional and tiny it doesn’t have much going for it on the face of things, but if you take the time to travel here you will find it is home to a modest harbour, but more importantly, a lovely, unspoilt beach with wonderful views. After your day on the beach, enjoy a spot of wine tasting at the local winery!
Having grown from a small fishing to a bustling resort, Skala is one of the best known areas of Kefalonia. There are plenty of bars, tavernas and fragrant hills creating a pretty backdrop but when the temperatures soar in the summer months, it is the beach which sets Skala apart from the rest. It’s a fine mix of shingle and sand making for lovely clear water and with all the facilities you could need, it’s a great setting for a hot, summer beach holiday.
The Greek Islands are famed for their fantastic coastlines and of course the excellent swimming spots so this list is by no means exhaustive. Hopefully however, it will provide some guidance as to the top swimming spots in Kefalonia during your holiday here.
